BRUSSELS -- European Union foreign policy chief Javier Solana is in Belarus for a one-day visit.

Solana will meet with President Alyaksandr Lukashenka and Foreign Minister Syarhey Martynau to discuss developments in Belarus, Minsk-Brussels relations, and the Eastern Partnership.

Solana will also meet with opposition leader and former presidential candidate Alyaksandr Milinkevich and other representatives of Belarusian civil society, RFE/RL reports.

In recent months, the EU and Belarus have both signaled an interest in stronger cooperation.

The EU has suspended a travel ban against top officials while Belarus has taken some cautious steps towards political liberalization.

Belarus has expressed interest in joining the Eastern Partnership program, a EU foreign policy initiative to upgrade relations with its neighbors.
