ASHGABAT -- Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdymukhammedov has been sent a new charter that would reinstate the Academy of Sciences, which was shut down under former President Saparmurat Niyazov.

RFE/RL's Turkmen Service reports that under the charter -- which was prepared by parliament and the Supreme Council for Science and Technology -- the academy will grant advanced science degrees, fund scientific research, monitor imported technology, and train teachers.

Experts say the institution will help the country develop in science, engineering, and technology.

The academy's proposed charter, or constitution, is expected to soon be signed by Berdymukhammedov, formally reestablishing the academy.

All decisions related to the state's scientific and technical policies are subject to government approval.
