ASTANA -- U.S. Ambassador to Kazakhstan Richard Hoagland expressed his concerns over Kazakhstan's new law on media adopted by the parliament recently.
Talking to journalists in Astana on January 21, Hoagland said that the new law allows authorities to bring journalists to court for slander, adding that very often it is hard to distinguish between slander and criticism.
According to Hoagland, local authorities might use the law to crack down on dissent.
