Bosnians Hold Vigil For Baby Who Died Amid ID Debate
Hundreds of people attended a vigil in front of the Bosnian parliament on June 16 for a three-month-old girl, Berina Hamidovic, who died after failing to receive timely medical treatment. A vital operation, available in Serbia, was delayed because Berina had no passport, the result of lawmakers’ failure to agree on legislation on citizens’ identity numbers. Bosnians have been protesting for a solution to the ID issue for weeks. At the vigil, Emir Hamidovic, Berina’s father, told RFE/RL’s Balkan Service about the family’s struggle with bureaucracy before and after the girl's death.
