Leka Zogu, the son of Albania's former king, has died at age 72, in a Tirana hospital.
Zogu attempted to bring back the monarchy to Albania and won the right to hold a referendum on the issue in 1997 but the proposal was rejected by voters.
Zogu was born in 1939, two days before Albania was occupied.
The family fled and Zogu spent most of his life in Europe and Africa returning for the first time in 1993, when authorities demanded he leave, and then again in 1997 for the referendum, only to leave once more.
He finally reached a deal with the country's parliament to return and live in Albania in 2002.
