"Ghanoon's" editor in chief says the ban was issued over a report about the release on bail of the former chairman of the Persepolis soccer club and a former member of the Revolutionary Guards.
The Iranian daily "Ghanoon" ("Law") was banned today "until further notice" by Tehran's Prosecutor office for "spreading lies."

"Ghanoon's" editor in chief, Massud Kazemi, said the ban was issued over a report about the release on bail of Mohammad Rouyanian, the former chairman of the Persepolis soccer club and a former member of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps.

Rouyanian, who headed the Management Transportation and Fuel Center under the previous government, was reportedly arrested on fraud charges.

Kazemi told the semi-official ISNA news agency that his daily had republished a news item by the news agency Dana.

"The prosecutor's office considered the story as an example of publishing lies and issued an indictment, " he said.

At least two other dailies have been shut down by authorities in recent months.
Based on reporting by ISNA, IRNA, and RFE/RL's Radio Farda

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
