Pakistani security officials say a gun battle between two Pakistani tribes over disputed mountain territory close to the Afghan border was continuing early on May 10, with at least 47 people killed and 25 injured.
The clashes between members of the Mada Khel and Paipali Kabul Khel tribes of North Waziristan began on May 8 in the village of Laoaara Mandi in the Data Khel area.
Local residents say the tribes support rival militant groups in the region.
North Waziristan is one of seven semiautonomous tribal areas in Pakistan where government security forces have little control and militant groups thrive.
Pakistan’s army launched an offensive in the area last June in an attempt to clear the mountainous region of Taliban militants.
