Eastern Uzbek City's Mayor 'Dismissed'

FERGHANA, Uzbekistan -- The mayor of the eastern Uzbek city of Ferghana is reported to have been dismissed, RFE/RL's Uzbek Service reports.

An official at the Ferghana city mayor's office, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told RFE/RL on August 15 that Erkin Nuraliev has been fired.

He did not say when Nuraliev was fired or for what reason.

The official said Nuraliev's deputy, Atabeg Mansurov, has been named interim mayor.

Opposition websites alleged that Nuraliev had ordered the demolition of buildings and the construction of new ones without official permission from the central government.

Ferghana, a city of some 215,000, is about 25 kilometers from the Kyrgyz border and 100 kilometers from Osh. It is the capital of Ferghana Province.
