Explosion Kills Nine In Pakistan

A bomb exploded at a compound in northwest Pakistan on July 21, killing nine people and wounding 20.

Senior administration official Zakir Hussain said the blast occurred when a bomber detonated explosives just outside the compound of anti-Taliban commander Maulana Nabi near the village of Spin Tal in the Orakzai tribal region.

The wounded were evacuated to a hospital in neighbouring Hangu district.

Several militant groups are active in Pakistan's northwestern semi-autonomous tribal regions, near the border with Afghanistan, including the Pakistan Taliban, which has been responsible for many of the bombings across the country in recent years.

Meanwhile, gunmen stormed a checkpoint in Pakistan's southwestern province of Baluchistan on July 21 and shot dead at least six soldiers.

Local administration chief Sohailur Rehman said the armed men surrounded the checkpoint near the Arabian Sea coastal town of Peshikan in Gwadar district, killing the soldiers and wounding three others.

Another official, Rehmat Dashti, said the assailants fled on motorbikes after the shooting.

No one immediately claimed responsibility for the attack.

Baluchistan suffers from Islamist militancy, sectarian violence between Sunni and Shi'ite Muslims, and a separatist insurgency which also targets government officials and security agencies.
