Iran Supreme Leader Defies West At Khomeini's Death Anniversary

Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has said that years of attacks by the West had not broken the Islamic Republic.

Khamenei made the comments at the 25th anniversary of his predecessor's death, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the founder of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

In his speech, broadcast live on state television from Khomeini's shrine, south of Tehran, Khamenei said: "A strong Western front has been doing whatever is in its power against the Islamic Republic for 35 years.”

Despite that, he added, the Islamic Republic has been "progressing day by day."

Khamenei warned officials of American efforts to "sow discord among leaderships" and foment coup d'etats and "color revolutions."

He also said Iran's domestic challenges include "shifting focus away from the real enemy” and “losing national unity."
