Reports from Iran say six people have died and 348 have fallen ill after drinking poisonous alcohol in the southeastern province of Kerman.
The semiofficial ISNA news agency quotes a medical official, Hamid Najmeddin, as saying that three people were in critical condition in a hospital’s intensive care unit on June 1.
Najmeddin says most of the dead and sick are thought to have consumed the tainted alcohol on May 29.
Drinking alcohol is illegal and considered sinful under Islamic law in Iran.
But homemade alcohol tends to be cheap and available on Iran’s black market.
