Iraqi Authorities Put Out Arrest Warrant For Central Bank Chief

Iraqi Central Bank governor Sinan al-Shabibi
An Iraqi judiciary spokesman says Iraqi authorities have issued an arrest warrant for the longtime governor of the country's central bank.

In comments made to the Associated Press news agency on October 18, Supreme Judicial Council spokesman Abdul-Sattar Bayrkdar said that Sinan al-Shabibi is wanted along with 15 other bank officials suspected of financial crimes.

Shabibi has headed the Central Bank since 2003.

Bayrkdar said he did not know if any of the 16 had been arrested yet. A member of al-Shabibi's legal team said he was unaware of any warrant being issued.

A special parliamentary commission raised concerns about the Central Bank after conducting a probe of the bank's activities.

On October 16, the cabinet voted to replace al-Shabibi until the investigation was complete.
