Kazakhstan says it plans to borrow 1.2 billion cubic meters of natural gas because of an expected shortfall of supplies as winter approaches.
Oil and Gas Minister Sauat Mynbaev said on September 4 that agreements had been reached with China, Russia and Uzbekistan to "borrow" the necessary amount of natural gas to meet what are expected to be higher needs this cold season.
According to Mynbaev, Astana still owes Russia's Gazprom for 800 million cubic meters of natural gas borrowed during the last heating season and intends to pay by November.
Oil-rich Kazakhstan has to rely upon natural gas from neighbors as its own natural gas reserves are not significant.
