BISHKEK -- Heavy snow in Kyrgyzstan's southern Osh region has trapped 20 local shepherds and some 2,500 sheep near the village of Kyzyl-Eshme, RFE/RL's Kyrgyz Service reports.
Emergency Situations Ministry spokesman Abdisharip Bekilov told RFE/RL on November 10 that the shepherds and their livestock were returning from a pasture in the Chong-Alai district to farms in Kadamjai district when a heavy snowfall cut them off.
Bekilov said the snow is about one-meter deep and the most urgent problem is how to provide the livestock with fodder and water so they do not starve to death.
Heavy snow in the northern part of neighboring Tajikistan earlier this week caused avalanches that have killed at least two men and their livestock.
