Russia's Medvedeva Wins Figure-Skating Championship

Russia's Evgenia Medvedeva won her first major title on December 12, claiming gold in the ISU Grand Prix Final figure-skating contest in Barcelona.

Crowned just this year as the junior world champion, Medvedeva coasted through a masterful free-skate routine set to Rene Aubry Charms' Allegro. She was lauded afterwards by a shower of flowers from the cheering crowd.

The score for the free skate added 147.96 points to her leading short program, for a total of 222.54 points.

"I didn't really expect this result here, but I worked really hard for it," Medvedeva said through a translator.

"I am very pleased with my first senior season and that I got to the Grand Prix Final. The main difference [this year] is the huge ovation I got from the crowd. It was great to give that kind of happiness with my skating," she said.

Satoko Miyahara of Japan took second place with 208.85 points, followed by another Russian 16-year-old, Elena Radionova, with 201.13.
