Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a decree naming February 27 the Day of Special Operations Forces.

The announcement of the day recognizing the new holiday was placed on Russia's official Russian legislation website on February 26, shortly after Putin signed the relevant documents.

The order came into effect immediately after signing.

It was unclear why February 27 was selected and no reason was given for the last-minute signing and announcement.

The chief of the General Staff of Russia's Armed Forces General Valery Gerasimov called for the creation of such a holiday nearly two years ago.

Based on reporting by Lenta.ru, mk.ru, and TASS

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
