Pro-Russian separatists have seized control of the television broadcast center in the eastern Ukrainian city of Donetsk.

The separatists on April 27 raised the flag of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic over the building.

The crowd included several dozen masked men wearing camouflage fatigues.

They said they will take Ukrainian state television off air and broadcast Russian tv channels instead.

Earlier, a crowd of several hundred rallied in the center of Donetsk chanting "Russia!" and "Referendum!"

The separatists say they want to hold a referendum on possible secession from Ukraine in early May.

Separatists already control the regional governor's office and the city hall in Donetsk, the main city in eastern Ukraine, as well as official buildings in a string of other eastern towns.
