Tajik Attackers Seek Retribution For Murder Sentence

KHORUGH, Tajikistan -- Tajik police have detained two men suspected of attacking a court and prosecutor's office in southwestern Tajikistan, RFE/RL's Tajik Service reports.

Dozens of men attacked and vandalized the Badakhshan court building and prosecutor's office in Khorugh, the administrative center of Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Province, on June 10.

Several court employees were beaten in the incident. Deputy court chief Kholiq Khalilov, Judge Akbar Safarov, and a third person were hospitalized with injuries sustained in the attack.

Interior Ministry spokesman Mahmadullo Asadulloev told RFE/RL on June 13 that Eraj Sadonshoev, 41, and Jamshed Sheraliev, 26, were taken into custody. Asadulloev said police are searching for the other assailants.

The men were reportedly angered by a nine-year prison term the court gave Qayum Rahmikhudoev for killing a man who allegedly broke into his home and attacked him.

They also claimed that a court employee accepted money in return for a more lenient sentence for Rahmikhudoev, but that the bribe-taker did not keep his promise.
