The Yemeni Defense Ministry says 10 militants linked to Al-Qaeda have been killed in air and artillery strikes in southern Yemen.

According to the ministry, insurgents from the radical self-styled group Ansar al-Sharia were attacked by the army in Zinjibar, the capital of the southern province of Abyan on May 10.

But broadcaster Al Arabiya reported that five of the 10 insurgents were killed in U.S. drone strikes.

Yemeni President Abd Rabu Mansour Hadi, who took office in February, has vowed to fight Al-Qaeda, calling it a "religious and national duty."
