U.S. Treasury Sanctions Iranian Official For Rights Abuses

The U.S. Department of the Treasury has announced sanctions against Morteza Tamaddon, an Iranian government official, for being involved in activities limiting the freedom of expression and assembly of Iran’s citizens.

Under Secretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence David S. Cohen said May 23 “the United States is keenly focused on promoting opportunities for the Iranian people to fully exercise their universal rights.”

He added, “We will continue building on the U.S. Government’s longstanding efforts to contest the Iranian government censorship of the Iranian people.”

Tamaddon is currently head of the Tehran Provincial Public Security Council.

The sanction order said that as former Governor-General of Tehran Province he used his authority to limit Iranians’ freedom of expression and assembly following the disputed 2009 elections in Iran.
