April 29, 2006 -- Suspected Taliban militants have threatened to kill an Indian contractor they abducted on April 28 unless all Indians working in Afghanistan leave within 24 hours.
A purported Taliban spokesman, Qari Mohammad Yosuf, accused the Indian of being an "American spy".
The Indian and his Afghan driver were kidnapped by gunmen in southern Zabul Province. Officials said police reinforcements had been sent to the province to help hunt down the kidnappers.
In New Delhi, the Indian Foreign Ministry said there had been "no communication or contact" by the Taliban so far.
Suspected Taliban militants have in the past abducted aid-agency workers and foreign company staff. Some have been released, but several have been killed.
In a separate incident today, two suspected Taliban were killed when government forces attacked their hideout in the southern Helmand Province.
