Georgian Ruling Party Wins Local Elections

President Mikheil Saakashvili emerges after casting his vote in Tbilisi (InterPressNews) October 11, 2006 -- According to official preliminary results, the National Movement party of President Mikheil Saakashvili has won 77 percent of votes in local elections held on October 5.

Opposition leaders have alleged that the poll was riddled with fraud, but international observers said it was generally free and fair.


The election, which came amid a crisis in relations with Russia, was seen as a test of Saakashvili's personal popularity.
