Kyrgyz Man Rescued From Abandoned Mine

BATKEN, Kyrgyzstan -- A Kyrgyz man trapped in an abandoned mine for three days has been rescued, RFE/RL's Kyrgyz Service reports.

Emergency Situations Ministry's spokesman Abdysharip Bekilov told journalists on November 23, that Koldosh Temirbekov, 46, from the southern town of Kyzyl-Kiya, spent three days and nights about 40 meters underground after the abandoned mine's underground supports collapsed on November 20.

Temirbekov was illegally extracting coal in the idle Jin-Jegen mine near Batken. It is unclear if an investigation will be launched into his unlawful mining.

Many villages and towns in Kyrgyzstan rely heavily on coal for the heating of homes. The demand for coal rises as winter approaches.
