IAEA Chief Downplays Russian Nuke Help In Iran

el-Baradei: Bushehr not 'at the center of international concern' (file photo) 29 June 2004 -- Russian President Vladimir Putin met today with the visiting director-general of the UN's International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Muhammad el-Baradei, to discuss the nonproliferation of nuclear technologies.

El-Baradei said there is nothing worrying about concerning Russia's cooperation with Iran in building a nuclear power facility in the Iranian city of Bushehr, an issue the United States has brought up on several occasions.

El-Baradei said Russian-Iranian cooperation on the Bushehr plant is a bilateral project "not currently at the center of international concern."

El-Baradei said he and Putin discussed mainly issues concerning the nonproliferation of nuclear technologies and the establishment of a nuclear-free zone in the Middle East region.
