Ukraine Checking Reports Of PM Assassination Plot

28 July 2005 -- Ukraine's Security Service (SBU) says it is investigating reports of an attempt to assassinate Prime Minister Yuliya Tymoshenko.

Spokeswoman Marina Ostapenko said the SBU is checking the information and is taking what she called "necessary measures." She said the information had been received from law enforcement bodies from Western countries.

She gave no information about who was behind the attack, or when or where it was supposed to have taken place.

Tymoshenko's office was not immediately available for comment.

Tymoshenko is a controversial figure who has vowed to crack down on rampant corruption in Ukraine and to review several questionable privatizations that occurred under the former regime.
