Kadyrov Approved As New Chechen Premier

Ramzan Kadyrov (file photo) (ITAR-TASS) March 2, 2006 -- The parliament of Russia's Republic of Chechnya today approved Ramzan Kadyrov as the new Chechen prime minister.

Kadyrov was nominated to the post by Chechen President Alu Alkhanov, who called him his "closest associate."

The 29-year-old Kadyrov is the son of former Chechen President Akhmed-hadji Kadyrov, who was assassinated two years ago.

Human rights groups accuse Ramzan Kadyrov of leading a shadowy security force they say is responsible for the abduction and abuse of civilians.
