Putin Warns Against Montenegro Model

Russian President Putin (file photo) (ITAR-TASS) June 2, 2006 -- Russian President Vladimir Putin today said the international community should not support independence for separatist regions.

Responding to questions about Montenegro's vote for independence from Serbia, Putin said that supporting separatist bids could encourage other regions to take the same path.

That, he said, could set "negative precedents" for other regions, such as Kosovo, Abkhazia, and South Ossetia.
