Moscow Legislature To Consider Another Term For Luzhkov

Luzhkov (right) with Putin in September 2006 (ITAR-TASS) June 25, 2007 -- Moscow's City Duma, or parliament, has scheduled a special session for June 27 to consider confirming Yury Luzhkov for a fourth term as mayor.

Luzhkov was officially nominated by Russian President Vladimir Putin on June 22.

With the pro-Kremlin Unified Russia party dominating the city legislature, Luzhkov is widely expected to be elected.

Opposition politicians have said the Kremlin wants to keep Luzhkov in power to help deliver votes in State Duma elections in December 2007 and in presidential elections in March 2008.
