Iran's Leader Backs Gasoline-Rationing Move

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Supreme Leader (Fars) June 30, 2007 -- Iran's supreme leader today voiced support for the government's decision to ration gasoline in the country.

Official Iranian media reported that Ayatollah Ali Khamenei hailed the government's "bravery" in a speech to President Mahmud Ahmadinejad and senior officials.

The government announced on June 26 that private motorists were permitted to buy only up to 100 liters of subsidized gasoline per month.

The move sparked attacks on gas stations in Tehran and looting at banks and supermarkets.
