ISLAMABAD (Reuters) -- Security forces have extended an offensive against Taliban militants in northwest Pakistan to Buner district, around 100 kilometers north of the capital, Islamabad.
"The aim of the offensive is to eliminate and expel militants from Buner," military spokesman Major-General Athar Abbas told a news conference on April 28.
Pakistani forces began operations against militants in Lower Dir district of the Malakand division in the North West Frontier Province on April 26. Buner is also part of Malakand.
