Turkmenistan Amends Rules For Free Gasoline


ASHGABAT -- Turkmenistan has introduced new regulations for the distribution of free gasoline to Turkmen citizens, RFE/RL's Turkmen Service reports.

Anyone with a Turkmen passport, vehicle registration, and a driver's license will be able to receive coupons from banks that will entitle them to receive free gasoline. A driver's license was previously not needed.

According to the regulations, car owners will receive coupons for 120 liters of free gasoline every month. Owners of trucks, tractors, and buses can receive 200 liters of gas per month, while motorcyclists will get 40 liters per month.

The new regulations went into effect on January 1.

The first decree granting Turkmen citizens free gasoline was adopted in February 2008.
