UN Report: Environmental 'Disaster' Looms In West Ukraine

A new report claims immediate action is needed to avert an environmental "disaster" in western Ukraine, where toxic materials from former mines could spread into the area and threaten the health of local communities.

The final report of a UN-EU mission of experts to the Kalush area in the Ivano-Frankivsk region described the situation there as "critical."

The mission, conducted last month, found there was a high probability that an open-cast mine could break through into the Sivka River and thus spread dangerous organic pollutants into the local environment.
