U.S., Russia, Canada Cooperate On Air-Defense Drill

U.S., Russian, and Canadian forces are cooperating in a counterterrorism drill today -- with Russian and U.S. war planes practicing joint efforts to intercept a hijacked passenger plane.

Flying east across the pacific Ocean on August 8 from Anchorage, Alaska, a passenger plane posing as a hijacked aircraft was followed first by U.S. fighter planes and then Russian fighters.

Running through August 10, the exercise code-named Vigilant Eagle is meant to test coordination between civilian air-traffic controllers and military forces from Russia, Canada, and the United States.
