UFA, Russia -- A new monument to Soviet founder Vladimir Lenin has been unveiled in Ufa, the capital of the Russian republic of Bashkortostan, RFE/RL's Tatar-Bashkir Service reports.

Some 100 people, including Gennady Zyuganov, chairman of Russia's Communist Party, attended the ceremony.

The monument is located in a small park on Communist Street.

It is made of marble and stands on the same spot where an earlier plaster statue of Lenin was erected in 1924, the year he died.

In the late 1980s the monument was removed. Earlier this year, local communists initiated the idea of erecting a new monument to Lenin in the same spot. The idea was approved by Ufa City Council.

Many people in Bashkortostan and the neighboring republic of Tatarstan are still nostalgic about their Soviet past.

Several streets in major cities still bear the names of Soviet-era and communist leaders, and there is still a large monument to Lenin on the central square in Kazan, the capital of Tatarstan.
