Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said his country takes a "grave view" of Iran's plan to send two naval ships through the Suez Canal to the Mediterranean on February 21.

The planned crossing, he said, is an attempt by Iran to exploit the recent instability in Egypt and expand its influence in the region.

Earlier in the day, Suez Canal officials in Egypt said the two ships were due to sail through the waterway on February 21, denying a report from Iran that the vessels had already crossed.

The vessels would be the first Iranian naval ships to sail through the canal since Iran's Islamic Revolution in 1979.
