OSCE Condemns Shutdown Of Kazakh Independent Magazine

OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media Dunja Mijatovic has condemned the shutdown of one of Kazakhstan's very few independent publications, known for its criticism of government policies.

An Almaty court ruled on October 22 to annul Adam (Human) magazine’s registration certificate and to close down its Facebook page following a violation of the law on languages.

Mijatovic said in a statement on October 27 that “The punitive practice of unduly obstructing free expression and free media in Kazakhstan should be reversed immediately.”

Noting that numerous media outlets have been suspended or closed, and online portals blocked in Kazakhstan in recent years, Mijatovic called on the authorities to “take steps in reviewing national legislation restricting media activities and, as necessary, repealing or amending disproportionately prohibitive provisions.”
