The Palestinian Authority today set July 9 as the date for local elections.
The Palestinian Authority has not held an election since 2006, leaving President Mahmud Abbas and members of parliament in office after their terms expired.
The municipal election was supposed to have been held last July, but it was canceled amid disagreements within Abbas' Fatah faction.
Today's decision comes amid ongoing antigovernment protests in Egypt.
A Palestinian government spokesman said the government decreed that elections should be held in the West Bank and in Gaza which is ruled by the rival Hamas faction.
Hamas has said it would not allow any vote there.
