March 19, 2006 -- Iran's largest opposition party has called for dialogue with the United States and a freeze on sensitive nuclear work to head off an escalating crisis with the international community.
Mohammad Reza Khatami of the Participation Front said the group was proposing a return to the country's previous policies and the voluntary suspension of all work on the nuclear fuel cycle.
The UN Security Council is considering what action to take against Iran over its refusal to halt uranium enrichment, a process that creates fuel for nuclear power stations but can also serve as the core of an atomic weapon.
The United States suspects Iran is seeking to build nuclear weapons, charges denied by Tehran.
