U.S. Appeals To Serbian, Kosovar Leaders

Daniel Fried (InterPressNews) March 7, 2007 -- A senior U.S. official touring Serbia and its UN-administered province of Kosovo has urged leaders there to tone down angry political rhetoric.

U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Daniel Fried said in Pristina today that all politicians should abandon what he called "slogans [and] angry words" in order to help resolve questions about Kosovo's future status.

Fried also praised a United Nations proposal on Kosovo's future status as a "balanced package" that "gives something to both sides."

Fried's remarks come ahead of UN-mediated talks on March 10 about the status of Serbia's predominantly ethnic Albanian province.
