Militants Attack Iraqi City

(RFE/RL) 1 December 2005 -- Militants in Iraq are reported to have attacked a U.S. base and a local government office in the city of Al-Ramadi.

Scores of masked gunmen fired mortars and rockets at the buildings before dispersing throughout the city.

Al-Ramadi, west of Baghdad, has long been a focal point of militant activity in Iraq. The attack comes after U.S. and Iraqi troops launched a joint operation near the city yesterday.

Also yesterday, U.S. President George W. Bush said he would accept nothing less than "complete victory" in Iraq. He said U.S. troops could begin to withdraw as Iraqi forces gain competence.
