UN Envoy Says Chechnya Visit Not Cancelled


Manfred Nowak (file photo) (AFP) October 5, 2006 -- UN Special Rapporteur on Torture Manfred Nowak said today he hopes to carry out soon a trip to Chechnya put off after Russia barred him from visiting prisoners privately.


But he said he and Russia agreed that the visit was postponed and not cancelled.


Nowak said September 4 that he is canceling his trip scheduled for October 9-20 to Russia's North Caucasus region after Russia put restrictions on his visit.
