New Protests Held In Syria

Syria was swept by a wave of pro-reform protests in March 2011.

Some 500 Syrian students reportedly demonstrated today in the second-largest city of Aleppo for the first time since a wave of pro-reform protests broke out in mid-March.

Activists said security forces and students clashed at the protest on the campus of Aleppo University's faculty of literature.

Police arrested at least four students after dispersing the protest by force.

In related news, witnesses said thousands of Syrian women and children holding white flags and olive branches blocked a main coastal highway today.

The women gathered along the main road between the coastal cities of Tartous and Banias, demanding authorities release detainees picked up during a crackdown on opponents of President Bashar Assad's authoritarian regime.

Hundreds of men have been rounded up in the northeastern villages of Bayda and Beit Jnad and surrounding areas in recent days.
