RFE/RL is looking for a Senior Social Media Editor in Riga, Latvia. In this role, you will oversee digital and social media production across platforms including YouTube, Instagram, Telegram and TikTok, helping Radio Svoboda and Current Time reach new audiences, deepen loyalty and build trust.

You will work closely with Russia Programming WEB & Digital, relevant language services and editorial leadership to manage social media workflows, coordinate multimedia storytelling, track performance metrics and ensure that published content meets RFE/RL’s editorial standards.

This role is suitable for an experienced social media editor with strong news judgment, a background in digital journalism and experience managing teams in a fast-moving newsroom environment.

What you will do

You will:

  • coordinate and manage social media content production, distribution and native formatting across platforms including YouTube, Telegram, Instagram, TikTok and others
  • oversee editorial workflows and copy flow, including quality checks before and after publication
  • edit content for the flagship digital platforms of Radio Svoboda and Current Time to maintain stylistic consistency and brand identity
  • define publication timelines and schedule social media writers and editors
  • mentor social media producers, writers and reporters, supporting their professional development and performance goals
  • ensure that all content is thoroughly fact-checked, edited and aligned with editorial standards
  • track and share platform performance metrics for ongoing projects, campaigns and strategic reviews
  • monitor social platforms and public debates for news leads, trending topics and viral conversations
  • identify digital trends and experiment with storytelling formats and audience development strategies
  • contribute to editorial meetings by tracking current affairs, regional news and pitching story ideas
  • adapt and reshape text, visual and video content across language services and platforms to maximize reach
  • draft and edit digital content and social media dispatches with a focus on mobile optimization, social media integration and newsletters
  • design interactive features such as polls and quizzes to increase audience engagement
  • source and verify user-generated content in line with professional standards
  • support a 24/7 news cycle, including rotating shifts and breaking-news coverage when required

What we are looking for

This role is suitable for an experienced digital journalist and social media editor who can lead day-to-day publishing work, guide colleagues and make sound editorial decisions under deadline pressure.

You should have:

  • 3+ years of experience in social media
  • 2+ years of experience in digital journalism within a news organization
  • 3+ years of experience managing teams
  • strong news judgment and analytical skills
  • advanced social media production and multimedia storytelling skills
  • excellent news writing and editing skills
  • deep understanding of digital success metrics and industry-standard analytics tools
  • familiarity with modern social media management, publishing and listening platforms
  • ability to multitask and prioritize with little supervision under tight deadlines
  • experience working in a multicultural or multinational environment, or experience living and working abroad, preferably in relevant target regions
  • broad knowledge of political, economic and social situations and international affairs
  • ability to work effectively with different teams, perspectives and organizational needs

A bachelor’s degree in journalism or a related field is preferred. Equivalent professional experience will also be considered.

Familiarity with HTML, mobile optimization practices and video editing tools is a distinct plus.

Languages

  • Russian: required, due to the nature of the role and the need to work with Russian-language audiences and content.
  • English: fluent/professional proficiency, required for internal communication.
