Uzbekistan's Defense Minister Sacked


Defense Minister Guyamov (Right) with U.S. General Tommy Franks in 2001 (epa) 18 November 2005 -- Uzbek President Islam Karimov today unexpectedly sacked Defense Minister Kadir Gulyamov, RFE/RL's Uzbek Service reported.

Initial reports indicate that Ruslan Mirzaev, chairman of the Uzbek Security Council, has been appointed as acting defense minister.

There was no immediate explanation for Gulyamov's dismissal.
