600 Suspected Taliban Killed In Past Six Weeks

U.S. and Afghan troops on patrol in the Paktika Province (file photo) (AFP) July 25, 2006 -- A spokesman for the U.S.-led coalition said today that more than 600 suspected Taliban militants have been killed in Afghanistan in the past six weeks.

A new military offensive began on June 10 in the south, aimed at eliminating remaining members of the Taliban regime ousted in 2001.

In the east of the country, violence cost the life of a soldier in the international coalition Seven insurgents died in the clash.
