Afghan Car Bomb Kills At Least Seven

Afghan officials say that a suicide car-bomb attack in southern Afghanistan has killed at least seven civilians and injured more than 20.

Ahmad Jawed Faisal, the spokesman for the governor of Kandahar Province, said the blast went off in Kandahar city near the entrance to Kandahar University, which is located about 2 kilometers from a major U.S. military base.

He said all of the casualties were civilians.

The attack comes after Taliban fighters two weeks ago stormed two joint Afghan-NATO bases in Kandahar Province, killing four Afghan police officers.

Kandahar, the birthplace of the extremist Taliban movement, remains one of the hotbeds of the decade-long insurgency against international forces and the Western-backed government of President Hamid Karzai.
