UN Refugee Agency Says 4.2. Million Iraqis Displaced

(RFE/RL) June 5, 2007 -- The UN's refugee agency says 4.2 million Iraqis have been displaced by violence in their country.

Jennifer Pagonis, spokeswoman for the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), said the figure will continue to rise.

Pagonis said the UNHCR is also receiving "disturbing reports" of Iraqi authorities doing little to provide internally displaced persons with food and shelter. She added that Iraq's neighbors, Jordan and Syria, are bearing the bulk of the refugee burden.
