RFE/RL’s mission is to advance democratic values by delivering accurate, uncensored news and fostering open debate in regions where a free press is under threat and disinformation is widespread. We are committed to fact-based journalism, carried out with integrity, independence, and resilience—even in the face of pressure.
Radio Azadi, the Afghan Service of Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, is looking for experienced and versatile journalists who work in either Pashto or Dari or both and have good proficiency in English. In this role, you will produce high-quality content across multiple platforms, including radio, television, and digital media, contributing to impactful journalism that reaches audiences where it matters most.
What You’ll Do
- Create original, high-quality content across a wide range of topics — producing bulletins, dispatches, features, and in-depth analyses for various platforms. When acting as program editor, prepare and manage running orders and adapt content as needed.
- Deliver content live and online, blog, record, and contribute multimedia inputs, including photos and video. Coordinate with production teams such as sound and camera crews when required.
- Produce content across formats—live, recorded, digital, and print—using appropriate tools and technologies, or directing specialists where needed.
- Work as a field correspondent and reporter on assignment.
- Research thoroughly and select accurate, reliable information from a wide range of credible sources.
- Conduct interviews in studio, by phone, or on location.
- Stay up to date on political, economic, and social developments relevant to the coverage area, with daily preparation on current events.
- Uphold RFE/RL editorial standards and take full responsibility for your work.
What You Bring
- Proven journalism experience 3–4 years (required).
- A bachelor’s degree in journalism or a related field (preferred).
- Proficiency in managing at least one key media platform, with a solid understanding of additional platforms and formats.
- Hands-on experience with audio and video equipment, word processing software, research tools, and emerging media technologies.
- Ability to consistently produce and deliver high-quality content in line with RFE/RL standards and best practices.
- Demonstrated initiative in pitching original story ideas, developing sources, conducting interviews, and writing both news and feature content, with light editorial guidance.
- Familiarity with RFE/RL or similar content management systems, including posting and editing text and images, adapting content for digital platforms, and supporting program scheduling.
- Strong editorial judgment in day-to-day work, with occasional need for supervision.
- Understanding of RFE/RL’s mission and target audiences within its broadcast regions.
- Proactive approach to professional development, with a willingness to learn and improve continuously.
- Collaborative team player with a supportive and cooperative mindset.
- Working knowledge of English, including the ability to use English-language current affairs sources daily and apply them effectively in work, with some editorial support.
Language requirements:
Pashto or Dari - native level (mandatory)
Second Afghan national language (desirable)
English language - excellent working knowledge
