The Minsk City Court on June 30 sentenced a local resident to four years in prison for sending money to activists and groups opposing the government of authoritarian ruler Alyaksandr Lukashenka. Kiryl Klimau accepted that he had made several $10 contributions to what he called "repressed people," but pleaded not guilty to the charge of financially supporting "extremist activities." Klimau was arrested in February and initially sentenced to 15 days in jail and after serving that term he was not released and sent to pretrial detention as the probe was opened against him.
