'Significant' Violations Found In Total Oil Project

A pipeline being built as part of the Sakhalin-2 project runs through the Zubrovy nature reserve (ITAR-TASS) October 24, 2006 -- Russia's natural resources minister says "significant" environmental violations have been found in the Karyaga oil field being developed in the Arctic by the French company Total.

The comments by Yury Trutnev come amid concerns that the Kremlin is trying to regain control over energy projects involving major international companies.

Trutnev was also due in Sakhalin on October 24 to inspect a liquefied natural gas project led by Royal Dutch Shell.
